Worst idea for a PrEP campaign ever: “F*** raw! PrEP works”

Worst idea for a PrEP campaign ever: “F*** raw! PrEP works”

Yeah, I’m just going to file this under “height of irresponsibility”.  My rant follows the story…

Not entirely as they seem, however, the posters were part of a campaign by the SEEITCLEARLY2020 campaign. The campaign’s Instagram page reads: “See it clearly. See HIV prevention clearly. See bareback sex clearly. See PrEP clearly.”

They were spotted outside the Randy Dragon Bar in Flinders Lane between Queen and Elizabeth Streets.

More posters were spotter later on Friday.

In a statement released by SEEITCLEARLY2020 the group said: “Our current poster campaign is designed to shock, it is designed to start a conversation and it has been implemented across Melbourne because of the lack of education and the lack of awareness by existing public health authorities. So we are taking it into our own hands, and we are talking about bareback sex when no other group will.”

PrEP is not yet available in Australia, and is currently undergoing clinical trials in Europe.

Organisations advocating for PrEP to become available have said they are not sure the way the message is carried on these posters is appropriate, but that it shows the great deal of interest in PrEP from the gay community.

That whole, “We’re doing this to shock and awe and start the conversation” thing is bullshit.  There are far better ways to do this, and considering that PrEP isn’t even IN Australia yet this is completely irresponsible.  It’s encouraging people to fuck raw (and forget any caution they might have had about STI’s) and doesn’t present all the facts on PrEP that people need to know). The poster’s end line of “No More HIV” is ridiculous on it’s face.

I’m 51 years old, have sex on a regular basis (usually without condoms) and I’m HIV negative. I’ve also never had a STI. Why? Education and conversations with partners. Not because I jump blindly into the abyss without all the facts I need to know to keep from falling on my face.

There are far, far better ways to mobilize the community and get PrEP into the country. This one, to me, is a big #fail

You talk about other people being irresponsible and you bareback? That’s pretty funny. What happens if you meet a really good liar and your indestructibility fails?

yes, I do. Because I don’t pick up strangers. My man and I both tested before we barebacked. The friend that plays with us? Guess what? He tested with us too and we all felt comfortable enough that nobody had an concerns about one of us going out on the prowl and picking up strange tail and bringing something back to the other two. Clearly you never bothered to read the part of my article where I state

I’ve put my money where my mouth is my entire sexual career. Can you say the same?

Have you talked to your doctor about this?

Take a look at my website. I have more conversations around sex in a week than some people have in a lifetime. My doctor is well aware of my health and my sexual activity. He told me, and I quote “I wish more of my patients took the time to talk to their partners about sex like you do”
