The gay furor over WMMS

The gay furor over WMMS

The internet is rightfully exploding over comments made by Dominic Dieter of Rover’s Morning Glory on WMMS, stationed in my hometown of Cleveland.

The comment was made by Dominic Dieter, a DJ at Cleveland rock station WMMS. Speaking during the Rover’s Morning Gloryshow, Dieter was discussing a man who wrote the radio station about his gay daughter.

“You should get one of your friends to screw your daughter straight,” Dieter said, according to viewers.

GLAAD wants Dieter suspended. Aaron McQuade, GLAAD’s director of news and field media, released the following statement: “It was appalling and dangerous for this show to tell a father that he should have one of his friends rape his daughter. That’s essentially how Dieter responded to this listener, and this is no laughing matter in a world where people are too often the victims of violence and sexual assault based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation. And Dieter gave this vile advice to everyone who was listening, including educators, parents and children — sending the message that it’s okay to physically or sexually abuse people who are perceived to be gay.”

Legions of websites have regurgitated the same story as above, adding one sentence, and not bothering to do their homework on Rover’s Morning Glory or WMMS.  They are NOT massively influential – anymore.  As someone who lived in Cleveland most of his life I can tell you, 25 years ago they were the radio station to beat.  Now they have pitiful rankings in Arbitron, and rely on RMG as the anchor of their programming. Now, they rely on stories of Ke$ha urinating in public, porn stars then and now, and “babes of the day” – user submitted pictures of skanky women grabbing their boobs. (check out their website, linked above)

Worse is the big missed point on this story.  Dieter’s comments are absolutely appalling and he should be hung out to dry for them.  And on RMG, they happen all the time.  I’ve personally listened to them making fun of gays a dozen times, as well as obese people, old people, illiterate people, MRDD and it’s the mainstay of their programming.

In the course of six months, I personally put four different anti-gay comments made by the RMG crew on GLAAD’s radar.  The result?  Nothing.  No return contact of any kind.

The audience they cater to?  White, blue collar males – 20 to 29.  The fuckin’ A, chest bumping, fist knocking, have-another-Bud crowd.  And Dieter panders to them perfectly, as well as all the rest of the RMG crew.

Take a listen tomorrow on digital radio.  If you can stand it.  Rover’s nasal whine is like a rake on a chalkboard and he’s more than willing to pump out four hours of it in the morning.

WMMS lost it’s glory days when I hit puberty, and comments like Dieter’s are a near-daily occurrence.  If you want to impress me with your outrage, do some homework and target your attack better – don’t bother retreading the same story over and over or make some weird retort that Dieter should “stick his head in a pile of horseshit”.

If you want to make some impact in this situation you’d be calling for Rover’s program to be unplugged and the station fined over their history of allowing this to go on.  This is far from isolated, it’s just the first time anyone’s really paid attention.

Easily overdue:  they’re misogynist, homophobic, and anti ANYONE who’s not white heterosexual male.

Shane admitted it as such, that he can keep all of his sycophants on the station’s payroll by his lucrative contract with WMMS… the same day that Brian & Joe were cancelled on 106.5 (which Shane celebrated in his badly-scripted way).

Honestly, Shane’s show is so bad that it makes a mockery out of free speech. More of an abuse of the airwaves – and that’s how it’s been, since 2004.

The best thing CBS Radio ever did was let him walk back in 2008 over to WMMS.

Most of us in Cleveland knew the show was badly-acted kayfabe. Now it comes to bite them in the butt.

Actually, a funnier part of this story is that Shane French utterly bombed in syndication as one of Stern’s replacements – he was run out of Chicago on a rail, Detroit cancelled it in quick order, and all that remains is WMMS and a third-rate lowly-rated rock station in Rochester (where “Brother Wease” rules the roost on a CC-owned station). He’s only done decently in Cleveland, but couldn’t hold the smallest candle to Lanigan & Malone.

Bottom line: Shane French and Dominic Dieter deserve whatever grief comes their way, especially if GLADD blows this up into a national outrage. And this is the year of national outrages, after all.

Clear Channel and WMMS need to stop chasing the 20′s white male who’s too cheap to pay for satellite and go listen to Stern, and who thinks Jackass is amazing cinema.  Those days are over.  One look at WMMS’s website will tell you just how much they’re willing to scrap the bottom of the barrel and it’s truly sad.  This station used to mean something in terms of radio and classic rock, now it’s stuck in the 90′s with a nasally Rover, his “crew” and five hours of pissing all over anyone he deems unfit to court his attention.  Namely, anyone outside of the demographic he chases.

Will Dieter get fired?  No, (though he should be) and Clear Channel will probably issue a lame apology (if they do at all) and hang their case on the fact that Dieter never said “rape”.  He implied it, but never said it – that’s their out.

GLAAD would do well to pull a few transcripts of this show and put together a case that shows this type of comment is pretty common with Rover’s show, not just this particular instance.  Petitions are useless at this point, everytime  the gay community gets their knickers in a twist about something, it generates a petition.  The entire point of them has been rendered impotent.

WMMS is now mostly programmed on a national basis – right down to the website. Whenever they bother to play music (middays, overnights and weekends), the playlists are taken entirely from Clear Channel’s “Premium Choice” programming service… it sounds the same as any other CC active rocker. No local programming input at all. None.

That few in GLAAD even knew about this show to begin with – even after it aired briefly in Detroit and Chicago (the latter where iconic media critic Robert Feder relentlessly went after Shane for his awful show in several memorable columns) speaks more of the show itself than of GLAAD. I can’t blame them; it’s only been successful in Cleveland because, well… we tend to like outrageous personalities. Like Gary Dee, Lanigan or Trivisonno. Rover pales in comparison to all three… (even Triv knew to have a strong support cast of Marty Allen, Paul Rado and Kim Mihalik at his peak).

And this incident originally aired MONTHS EARLIER but ran again on a “best-of” this week (a new million-dollar studio is in the process of being built for the show). It wasn’t even live!

Intentional scheduling on Shane’s part? You betcha. For a guy like Shane French, he thrives on hype around his on-air persona. He craves this attention, and always has. It’s why Dominic was never reprimanded for a 2009 for an incident that occurred during Shane’s day of hype, “Roverfest,” one that he had to go to court over. They love it, and I bet Shane is smiling from ear-to-ear right now.

I only give Shane credit in that he’s a shrewd businessman. He knows how to exploit an obvious target audience of 20-something meatheads and fratboys with a show of unlikeable people delving in sex, boobs. He owns all rights and all intellectual property to his show. His website is his exclusively, as opposed to WMMS’s hosted website for Alan Cox (or the previous site for Maxwell).

Not bad for a guy who has based his whole professional life on a lie.

Do you realize that GLAAD is inferring rape scenario to make their headline? If you are offended by the implication that straight sex would “cure” homosexuality, that should be central theme of these complaints. But his story is being propagated as a call to violence against gay women. It seems like an attempt to sensationalize an item to advance an agenda instead of genuine outrage. It should also be noted that these comments were made on an old show replayed while RMG was on break. Apparently Clear Channel mgmt. had no problem until it they saw the deluge of bad press on the horizon. Do you want that type of manufactured empathy?

I do and I don’t.  RMG is notorious for bashing anybody outside of their core demographic, so this was their reality check, first and foremost.

Dieter didn’t need to say the magic “R” word, he inferred it.  The fact that it didn’t actually fall from his lips is irrelevant.  If it’s not consensual, it’s rape.  It’s nothing more nuanced than that.

Do I want this sort of empathy?  Yeah, I do.  My being gay has been a punchline for 35 years (I came out when I was 13), and just because decades have passed it doesn’t become any easier to listen to when some yutz with a microphone actually makes a comment that some teen who’s possibly lesbian can be made straight by having heterosexual sex.  Gee, perpetuate a cliche’ much?

WMMS needed to fall on their sword on this one, simple as that.  GLAAD was quick to toss out the word rape and it stuck in terms of circulating the negative press worldwide.  We shall see if RMG cleans up their act.

He said “screwed”, not “rape” idiots… he is entitled to say what he believes. It’s called free speech, and just because you don’t like what he has to say, does not mean what he says is any more bad.

Rediculous, he ever said “rape, abuse” or anything that entitles thoughts to provoke rape. His job is entitled “shock jock” grow a par of balls and take a joke as a joke. GLAAD and any other “activist” group can go shove it! I think we should boycott WMMS, Clear channel, and GLAAD for suspending dieter!
