The gay furor over WMMS

The internet is rightfully exploding over comments made by Dominic Dieter of Rover’s Morning Glory on WMMS, stationed in my hometown of Cleveland.

The comment was made by Dominic Dieter, a DJ at Cleveland rock station WMMS. Speaking during the Rover’s Morning Gloryshow, Dieter was discussing a man who wrote the radio station about his gay daughter. 

“You should get one of your friends to screw your daughter straight,” Dieter said, according to viewers.

GLAAD wants Dieter suspended. Aaron McQuade, GLAAD’s director of news and field media, released the following statement: “It was appalling and dangerous for this show to tell a father that he should have one of his friends rape his daughter. That’s essentially how Dieter responded to this listener, and this is no laughing matter in a world where people are too often the victims of violence and sexual assault based on their actual or perceived sexual orientation. And Dieter gave this vile advice to everyone who was listening, including educators, parents and children — sending the message that it’s okay to physically or sexually abuse people who are perceived to be gay.”

Legions of websites have regurgitated the same story as above, adding one sentence, and not bothering to do their homework on Rover’s Morning Glory or WMMS.  They are NOT massively influential – anymore.  As someone who lived in Cleveland most of his life I can tell you, 25 years ago they were the radio station to beat.  Now they have pitiful rankings in Arbitron, and rely on RMG as the anchor of their programming. Now, they rely on stories of Ke$ha urinating in public, porn stars then and now, and “babes of the day” – user submitted pictures of skanky women grabbing their boobs. Worse is the big missed point on this story.  Dieter’s comments are absolutely appalling and he should be hung out to dry for them.  And on RMG, they happen all the time.  I’ve personally listened to them making fun of gays a dozen times, as well as obese people, old people, illiterate people, MRDD and it’s the mainstay of their programming.

In the course of six months, I personally put four different anti-gay comments made by the RMG crew on GLAAD’s radar.  The result?  Nothing.  No return contact of any kind.

The audience they cater to?  White, blue collar males – 20 to 29.  The fuckin’ A, chest bumping, fist knocking, have-another-Bud crowd.  And Dieter panders to them perfectly, as well as all the rest of the RMG crew.

Take a listen tomorrow on digital radio.  If you can stand it.  Rover’s nasal whine is like a rake on a chalkboard and he’s more than willing to pump out four hours of it in the morning.

WMMS lost it’s glory days when I hit puberty, and comments like Dieter’s are a near-daily occurrence.  If you want to impress me with your outrage, do some homework and target your attack better – don’t bother retreading the same story over and over or make some weird retort that Dieter should “stick his head in a pile of horseshit”.

If you want to make some impact in this situation you’d be calling for Rover’s program to be unplugged and the station fined over their history of allowing this to go on.  This is far from isolated, it’s just the first time anyone’s really paid attention.
