Ohio’s push for gay marriage

Ohio’s push for gay marriage

It’s finally nice to be able to put something out there about my home state that’s not negative.  It’s far too early to say if this endeavour will do anything to Ohio’s 2004 gay marriage ban, but it’s nice to see something out there.  Also, things in Ohio largely get skipped over by the uber-bloggers so I’m going to step up to the plate and represent.

What’s that you say?  Did the earth stop spinning?  He actually published a pro-gay marriage piece?  Is he getting on the gay-marriage-is-everything train?

No.

Before any of you start heating up the “hypocrite” branding irons, I’ll reiterate my stance on gay marriage, yet again.  It is important, it’s just not at the top of my bucket list of things I need in my life as a gay man.  Apparently though, there’s no room in the gay rights debate for anyone who doesn’t tow the line.  Sorry.  I’m not a Stepford gay and I never will be.  I’m far more concerned with things like HIV/AIDS, my son’s education and his transitioning to adulthood seamlessly, and getting me and my partner under the same roof as opposed to our long distance relationship.

There – rant over.  Here’s the piece:

Two prominent local Democrats signed on yesterday to lead a statewide effort to give gay people the right to marry.

Columbus City Council President Andrew J. Ginther and Franklin County Commissioner John O’Grady are two of the three chairmen of Ohio Leaders for Freedom to Marry. The third leader is former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Tim Hagan.

“Our commitment and role is to start the conversation about where we are headed in the state and make sure that loving, committed relationships are recognized by the state,” Ginther said yesterday.

In 2004, Ohio voters approved an amendment to the state constitution that defined marriage as solely between a man and a woman.

Ginther said it’s too soon to discuss whether the group would aim to overturn that amendment, which would stand in the way of any Ohio law allowing gay marriage.

The group was formed less than a week after a federal judge struck down California’s ban on gay marriage and the governor of Washington approved a gay-marriage law.
