Everything that Catches my Attention

Righteous indignation: it’s what’s for dinner

This story is quickly gaining on the one about those damn gay penguins for me:  it’s being played to death and I’m just about sick of seeing it:

Every single website out there has got their knickers in a knot about Joe King’s tacky and tasteless “I’m not gay, I’m just a sissy” calendar:

If you think this calendar looks like a tasteless, homophobic piece of trash that only an anti-gay bigot would find remotely funny, you’re right.  “Christian” (in quotes because I don’t think Jesus of Nazareth would find this cartoon very Christian, or humorous for that matter) cartoonist Joe King drew twelve homophobic cartoons, one for each month of the year, and each just as disgusting as the last.  And this is the result.  It’s being sold on Amazon and atBarnes & Noble.  On Amazon, you can view the inside of the calendar, but it’s difficult to make much of the wording out.  But you’ll notice from the “We All Have AIDS” sign that for February, the cartoonist makes AIDS a target of his “Christian humor.”  Yeah, because nothing says “Christian humor” like a good AIDS joke.

Well, congratulations to the gay internet:  this story being run absolutely everywhere is giving him tons of free publicity that he had to pay absolutely zero for and the “fans” of his work are going to kill themselves reaching for their credit card to buy it.  Because, you know if the gays are hating it, it’s gotta be good!

Even better in my opinion is that everybody is flipping their lids over the February calendar and the “We all have AIDS” sign without bothering to notice that was the Kenneth Cole’s PSA for World AIDS Day 2005.  Nobody seemed to object about Cole using it.  I searched Google; nobody weighed in.  Maybe if any one of these sites weighed in on AIDS more often than when someone is using it as a punchline they’d have remembered this bit.  (To be fair, Bilerico does put out pretty good coverage on HIV).  But, let’s move on.

Is something like this calendar really worth getting bent over?  Really?  Virtually every site I link above is calling for the troops to mobilize and demand Amazon and Barnes & Noble remove this from sale.  He’s a cartoonist for fuck’s sake, and from what I can tell a pretty unintelligent one:

The “truth” is that AIDS is an “elective” disease. It STOPS the day guys quit sticking it to each other. And for the tragedy of women and children infected— THAT stops the day their gay husbands and fathers stop cheating on them.
Anyone need MORE education, science or funding to understand THAT?

Am I defending King or his “work”?  No, I think he’s an asshole and it’s a piece of garbage.  Will I lose any sleep over this, or twist any muscle in my hands from all the wringing I’m supposed to be doing?  Uh, no.  In the grand scheme of things he’s really about as significant as the WBC, and I’m not about to go out looking for my pound of flesh based on some blurry photos and the half baked, unresearched position of a blogger who can’t remember that “We all have AIDS” was the PR campaign just a few years ago.

If we as a community wanted to REALLY hurt King’s profit from this, we’d have dismissed him for the asshole he is and ignored it just like we would any other petulant child who’s saying outrageous things for attention.  He’d have gotten no free publicity from our saddling up on the righteous indignation horse that we ride way too frequently and it’d have shown in the sales.

Instead we played right into his hands.

    • my point is that we need to pick the fights that need fighting. when you express outrage at absolutely everything, the claims of being oppressed and being discriminated against become hollow.
