The drive of a hate-filled mind
For those of you that don’t already know, I have a sixteen year old son who is the love of my life. He’s not even been with me a full year, and he – along with the rest of my family are the reason I get up in the morning.
He’s sixteen going on 40, very short, a slight build, somewhat effeminate, and he’s gay. His birth parents used him as a punching bag when he summoned up the courage to come out and within a few months his adoption was final. They signed away their parental rights, and I eagerly scooped them up. Jason no longer has to contend with any sort of bully in his life; I simply won’t allow it. He schools at home and has gone from straight “F”’s to straight “A”’s. Teachers and school officials weren’t stepping up to the plate to protect my son so I did what any parent with the resources would do: I got him the hell out of there and he won’t be going back. He’s also on a fast track for early college admission, comfortable in his own skin, and no longer flinches when you come up behind him too quickly.
Recent news has shown that some kids aren’t as lucky. Rylan Hunter has taken both sides of the bullying equation to task and laid them open for all to see in Hostile Environment and Fallen.
It’s not easy reading either piece, and I’m sure from Rylan’s point of view it wasn’t especially easy writing them, but they are the truth laid bare and should not be missed. Hostile Environment, in my opinion, should be read first.
