Cross Dressing Students to Protest Cancellation of Anti-Homophobia Event in BC

The GSA of Columneetza Secondary in Williams Lake were to have a anti-homophobia event at their school yesterday but it was cancelled when parents complained that it was promoting the gay lifestyle, not anti-homophobia.

So, students are striking back.

Plans are in the works now to come to school dressed in their opposite gender in protest of this cancellation and to promote their initial goal; anti-homophobia.

From the CBC News:

Students face consequences if they show up at school dressed in the opposite gender’s clothing, said Fallel.

“We were actually told that any student that comes to school dressed in the opposite gender’s clothing will be sent home and suspended and it could be on our permanent record,” said Fallel.

That threat was discriminatory, said Fallel.

“I was really angry, honestly, because we’re trying to promote acceptance of everybody, and make a safe school environment for everybody,” said Fallel.

“Our sponsor teacher came and told us there was actually an emergency [Gay Straight Alliance] meeting called because we were told that our activities were on the line,” she said.

Fallel said staff members were on board with it, “and it was only when parents started complaining that apparently it was an issue.”

Their protest event is scheduled for this Friday
