Pelosi Calls for Obama to Stop Discharging Gay Servicemembers Immediately
I know I said that I was unplugging for the evening, but this one won’t wait. Sorry; it’s the reporter’s curse. Your family and friends learn to deal with the fact that no matter how hard you try, someone is going to send something to your cellphone that needs to be reported on.

Pelosi Statement on ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Policy
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to a letter sent this afternoon by Admiral Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Defense Secretary Robert Gates concerning the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy:
“We all look forward to the report on the review of the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy by the Defense Department. In the meantime, the Administration should immediately place a moratorium on dismissals under this policy until the review has been completed and Congress has acted.”
Uh, ok. Wow. I can’t say I saw that one coming.
John Aravosis brings up an excellent point worth pondering:
To me, this is Pelosi calling the White House’s bluff. She’s in essence saying, if DOD is saying they don’t want to do repeal this year, and the White House isn’t in cahoots with them, then the President can issue an immediate moratorium on discharges and prove it.
I agree 100%. This is Pelosi stepping up to say, “We’re not getting a clear message of what’s going on. Your SOTU said that you want this repealed, a perfect opportunity is coming up on the Defense Authorization bill, and now you’re saying that you want to wait until DOD finishes their review. OK, great: here’s what you should do in the meantime.”
Again – my interpretation only.
I have a feeling there’s quite a few phone calls going on tonight around Pelosi’s statement. I’ll be very curious to see what the next few days hold.
Well done, Madam Speaker. I think you’re the first person that has stepped up to the mike and NOT tried to rope-a-dope us with some poorly worded statement.
