Props to my Twitter Friends
This morning I was supposed to be in London. I left Cleveland at 6am heading to New York, my first layover. At 8.05am, my phone started to vibrate like mad with news from friends telling me about the aftershock in Haiti. They’ve had them on a near-continuous basis since the earthquake but today’s was the strongest they’ve had thus far. Everybody wanted to know if Simon was all right and had I heard from him.
My friends on Twitter were the first ones to contact me.
My airline has gone out of there way to accommodate my change in travel plans, and until further notice I’ll be staying in New York at my ex-boyfriend’s house. He’s out of the country, and I have a standing invite to use his place whenever I’m in town. I haven’t gotten any update from Simon, and to keep me from panicking I booted up the laptop and got on Twitter to connect with those that follow me. In the two minutes that followed my posting Simon’s situation on my feed, there has been a such a tremendous outpouring of support that completely floors me. These are people I’ve never met in person, they don’t know Simon either.
I can’t begin to describe how grateful I am, and I know I’d be speaking for Simon in saying this. Our jobs don’t exactly mesh with sustaining a fruitful social life. We’re not in one place long enough to build friendships, so when your boyfriend goes off the grid in a devastated country, in real life there aren’t too many places to turn for support.
Who knew in the course of 140 characters how much love and support you could convey? It’s mind-blowing to me. I’m so grateful and blessed knowing you’re watching out from me.
